Day 5: Jesus Christ is the Promised Root of David

Breathe in God’s Truth

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Luke 1:31-33

Passages to Study: 2 Samuel 7:8-17; Matthew 1:1; Revelation 5:5

Questions to Consider

  1. How does God’s faithfulness shine even brighter against the backdrop of human unfaithfulness within His promises to the patriarchs? Consider the promises He made to Abraham, Jacob, Judah, and David. Will God ever break a promise?
  2. Consider all of the tiny details, human lives and decisions, and time that had to come together in just the right way for Christ to fulfill this prophecy. How does God’s ability to accomplish His ultimate plan despite man’s sinful choices encourage you to rest in His eternal plans today?
  3. How can Christ’s eternal reign give you comfort today in the circumstances you are facing?

Breathe out Your Response

Dear Jesus,
Thank You for keeping every single one of Your promises to Your children throughout Scripture. You set Your affection on one family, made a nation out of that family, and then You entered into the world as a child born into that family to bless every nation on the Earth with Your grace and love. You remained faithful to Your commitment even when every single human representative failed. You will continue to keep each promise.
