Breathe in God’s Truth
“But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.”
Matthew 16:15b-17
Passages to Study: John 1:40-42; Matthew 23:8-10; 1 John 5:1-5
The word “Messiah” literally means, “The Anointed One.” Those who were anointed in the Old Testament were prophets, priests, and kings. They were specifically chosen by God for a very specific task. While many were anointed, there was only one promised Messiah who would fulfill all three roles on behalf of God’s chosen people.
Questions to Consider
- How did Jesus Christ fulfill the role of a prophet, priest, and king while on earth? How does He currently fill those roles now and in the future?
- How did Jesus Christ demonstrate that He is greater than any earthly prophet, priest, or king?
Breathe out Your Response
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for being the promised rescuer, infinitely greater than any human prophet or leader. You perfectly fulfilled every single prophecy concerning Yourself throughout the Old Testament. Thank You for choosing to be God’s anointed suffering servant as well as the eternally reigning King Who crushed the head of the serpent and brought Your light and blessing to the nations!
