True Wisdom – James 3:13-18
5. True Wisdom comes from the Spirit through the Word.
1 Corinthians 2:6-16; Psalm 19; 2 Timothy 3:16; Romans 8
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory…Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
(1 Corinthians 2:6-7, 12-13)
Study it Out
- According to the Scripture passages above, why can we not fully understand or respond to Scripture without the help of the Holy Spirit? How does this concept tie into the previous study about the provision of wisdom beginning with faith?
- Read Psalm 19 and notice the instances of both general and special revelation. While God displays His majesty through creation, what are the specific benefits of His written Word listed in verses 7-14? What particular practice is emphasized in verse 14?
