What is God Like? – The Good News of Salvation Part 1
The word, “Gospel” simply means good news. But, good news is only as good as the source of that news. The good news of salvation is the best kind of good because it comes from the heart of One who is only good. Any discussion about humanity, philosophy, beauty, and eternity must begin with a discussion about God, the source and giver of all life.
There is no one like God! Only He is perfectly good. He determines what is right and what is wrong. Only He is perfectly great. That means everything centers around God. He alone deserves worship.
Take a moment to think about humanity’s constant search for someone or something to worship (to place value upon and trust in). We long to find our identity in an ideal or ideology, a person, in a god or religion, or most often, within ourselves and our own abilities. We see our need to put our trust in something. But, is that “something” worthy of our trust?
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:33-36)
STUDY IT OUT
- Read Jeremiah 10:1-16. In what were the people of this passage putting their trust? Could those gods provide for them in any way? What do people tend to put their trust in today?
- According to Romans 11:33-36, who is the source of all things? What do these verses tell us about our purpose and the purpose of all creation?
Creation and God’s Word reveal God’s character and greatness to us, and they also reveal our need for someone greater to meet our needs. We’ll explore God’s good creation and what it reveals about Himself even further in the next post.
